A wild buckwheat is a plant in the genus Eriogonum, a group of shrubs, mats and perennials native to western North America and unrelated to the buckwheat grain sold for pancakes. The grain comes from Fagopyrum esculentum, an Asian plant in the knotweed family, while Eriogonum belongs to the Polygonaceae as well but sits in its own lineage, the Eriogonoideae, and is not grown as a cereal. Eriogonum giganteum, Saint Catherine's lace, is the large one, a shrub or small tree from the Channel Islands. It is striking but needs space and mild conditions, so it is a poor first choice for a tight, cold garden.
